What’s the difference between being the kid of an artist or the kid of a banker? Maybe nothing, and maybe everything. But definitely: stuff. Usually: a parent that loved something enough to commit their lives to it. Often: a home life that existed outside of cultural norms. “Interesting” and “unique”.

After our parents’ deaths, cleaning up the mess or checking off the to do list they gave us, is where the difference becomes stark. What do we do with your art? And what do we do with the career you worked so hard for?

Over the past two decades an industry has sprung up around artists’ legacies and both private and nonprofit organizations have generated a wealth of research. We living amidst a growing and formalizing field. Resources and advice abound (see the research page), but what about the grief? What about the emotional connection? What about being their child?

In the hopes of generating conversation, to create a space where professionalism is not a requirement, Artists’ Kids hope to be a support network. A tool to connect those who wish to dig into how we get through it, uphold our parents legacy in this wild world while also remaining our own adult selves.

Who

Currently this is run by me, Daisy Murray Holman. The first meeting was hosted with Maggie Trakas in New York in February of 2025. The gathering left many wanting more.

Hope

With a simple platform, this website and a listserve, we can be boons to each other. We can lend specific advice, share our experiences, and hopefully get together in person to talk and hold space.
